A good coat does most of the work before anybody sees what is underneath it, and Edith is very good at that. It goes over a jumper and jeans and turns the pair of them into an outfit. Wear it to the station, to the theatre, to somebody's sixtieth, and it holds its own at all three. This is the one you keep for years and are still glad of.

WHY THE EDITH?

The check is the reason it looks expensive:A quiet pattern rather than a loud one, the sort that reads as considered from across a room. It has that slightly old fashioned confidence about it, which is exactly why it never dates.

Shape, without being stiff:The lapel collar and clean shoulder give it presence, but it falls easily and moves with you. Nothing pinches at the arm and nothing hangs like a sack.

Room for a jumper underneath:Cut a little generously, so a thick knit goes under it without a struggle at the sleeve. That is the difference between a coat you wear in January and one you look at.

Two colours, both easy to live with:Dark Green for something a little different, Grey for the days you want it to disappear into everything else. Both sit happily over black, navy and denim.

Sizes 2XS to XL:It runs true, with a relaxed line through the body. Take your usual size, and go up only if you plan to layer something substantial underneath.
