There comes a point where a shoe has to earn its place by the door rather than in the wardrobe. Bridget is the pair you pull on without thinking, for the school run, the garden centre, the long wander round town that was only meant to be half an hour. Nothing pinches by the afternoon and nothing needs easing off the moment you sit down. That is the whole point of them.

WHY THE BRIDGET?

• Room where your toes actually need it: The front is cut wide enough for your toes to sit the way they were meant to, instead of being pressed together and ignored. It is a small difference on the shelf and a very large one by four in the afternoon.
  
  
• Held up under the arch: There is proper shape built in underneath, so your foot is supported rather than left flat on a board. You notice it most on the days you are on your feet longer than you planned to be.
  
  
• The pavement stops being so hard: Cushioned through the sole so each step lands softly, with give underfoot rather than that jarring knock through the heel. Town, pavements, the odd bit of uneven path, all handled quietly.
  
  
• Smarter than they need to be: Plain enough for jeans and a coat on a Tuesday, tidy enough to wear to lunch without anyone thinking you gave up on shoes. They sit quite happily under trousers or with a skirt and thick tights.
  
  
• Three colours, sizes 2 to 9: Black, Dark Brown and Brown, and most women go for Black first because it goes with the coat they already wear every day. Take your usual size, and if you are between two, the larger of the pair leaves room for a thicker sock.
